Each brush is so (un)ique and (un)real like from another (un)iverse.
When crafting these brushes I wanted to play with the illusion of realism. I focused on the little details that make sketching on paper so satisfying and intuitive, and tried to find a way to implement this feeling and look into these brushes.
Like the little soft shadow that appears when using a real pencil, from all the particles that fall off of the tip and stay on the paper slightly blended – it often gets forgotten when making digital sketching brushes. But I noticed that it is absolutely game changing in many scenarios. Brushes like Dreamy Pencil, Cloud Sketch and Pencil Impossible are the ones where this effect is very visible, but most of the Procreate brushes from the Unreal Pencils brush set have a slight hint of that.
And that is only one of many observations I made when studying sketching on paper for this brush set, many lessons about texture, flexibility of application, shading, layering and more are ingrained in every setting of every brush in this set.
One very important thing I also wanted to do with this set is experimenting. I made some of these brushes to behave a little different and unexpected. I noticed that when there is some limitation or a “quirk” in a sketching brush, you are discovering more interesting ways to draw. It was hard to make them a little rebellious but still comfortable to work with. The brush Messy Sketch is the best example. It forces me to sketch a little differently, messy and more experimental than what I would normally do. Normally I tend to be very clean with every line, which can be a bad thing when sketching. So I appreciate that brush in particular for the way I go out of my comfort zone but still love the effects. Kind of feels like my hand is drawing in a different language!
